School Leaving Certificate (SLC)
The School Leaving Certificate examinations popularly abbreviated as SLC, is the final examination in the secondary school systems of Nepal. It is an academic qualification awarded in a specified subjects, generally taken in minimum number of 5 subjects by students aged 14– and above insecondary education in Nepal. It is equivalent to GCSE , the academic qualification in UK.
Every student must take part in this examination for completing the 10th grade of their study else they cannot upgrade for higher secondary / intermediate level education. The SLC examination is normally scheduled in the month of March – April and has been regarded as the “Iron Gate” for the academic career in Nepal as the students who fail it cannot proceed further in their study.
The compulsory Core Subjects are:
- Major Nepali,
- Major English
- Social Studies
Optional subjects are:
- Health Populations & Environment
- Optional Maths
- Computer Education
Nepal is divided into five development regions and each region has many examination centres (as per the Examination Commission’s Plan). The question pattern differs from region to region however it is same within a region. The examination is deliberately conducted at the same time throughout the country. Different centres are allotted to different students belonging to different school. TheSLC, Examination Control Board (Government of Nepal ) acts as a single voice for the examination board and centres also assists them to create common standards, regulations and guidance.
About three months after the completion of the SLC, the results are published by the Examination Control Board. Students are categorized into five divisions according to their score:
· Distinction – above 80%
· First Division – 60% to 79.99%
· Second Division – 45% to 59.99%
· Third Division – 32% to 44.99%
If one fails to get above 40 marks in each subject, they are declared fail. Despite such low pass marks the literacy rate in Nepal is low. Mostly students from rural areas fail to pass this exam due to lack of proper teaching staffs and infrastructure.
Leading universities often take into account performance at SLC level, sometimes expecting applicants to have a high proportion of securing high percentages gets special remarks and scholarship in Nepali society.
The first SLC of Nepal was held in the year 1990 B.S(1934 A.D). The topper in that year was Mr. Pushpabhakta Malla. From the year 1990 SLC Examination is being conducted regularly.
SLC examination result is published in the month of June-July. Every student who had appeared for this examination eagerly waits for his/her result. In this gap most of them join many bridge courses for a better career. SLC results is publish by the Office of the controller examination (OCE) every year.
